Saskatoon Soup – Rachel Betty Hoof, Elder- Kainai First Nation

This recipe is perfect for fresh or dried berries.

Directions:

Wash berries with clean water to remove microorganisms and dirt

Boil soup bones from meat and strain

Use broth of soup bones to cook Saskatoon berries

Add 1/2 Teaspoon (2 ml) of salt

Cook for approximately 1/2 hour

Mix approximately 2 Tablespoons (30ml) of flour with some water to make paste and then add to broth

Add sugar to taste

Note: In the old days white roots were used to thicken soup, Today sugar ans starch are used instead.
